Award-Winning
I’m an award-winning literary translator and editor working from Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian into English. My areas of expertise lie in literary and commercial fiction, short stories, and poetry – as well as literary and creative non-fiction – and my clients range from commercial to indie publishers, scouts, and agents. I am also a script writer and translator for adaptations and international co-productions.
I have a sharp eye and a natural flair for language, and I work scrupulously to make a text sing in English, whether that’s through translation, adaptation, or editing. My background is in education – as a Lead Practitioner, Specialised Leader in Education, coach and mentor – which makes me a proactive, consistent, and creative wordsmith and collaborator, adaptable to different contexts, projects, and working parameters.
An Avid Reader
As an avid reader, I’m constantly on the lookout for exciting new books from Europe, Latin America, and Lusophone Africa. I deliver reader’s reports and samples on the hottest new books, and also provide insight and consultancy on international literature for all sorts of clients in the literary sphere. I’ve lived in Spain, Colombia, and Brazil and spent extended periods of time in Italy, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Mexico, Cuba, and Guatemala. I still travel frequently, hunting down the best in international literature in independent bookshops and at events and book fairs worldwide.
A Penchant for Anything Unconventional
I’m most interested in literature by women and by underrepresented writers, and have a penchant for anything that is dark, witty, or a little bit different. A few books I’ve read and loved recently include The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson, The Mobius Book by Catherine Lacey, Ceniza en la boca by Brenda Navarro, The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, Dominion by Addie E. Kitchens, May We Feed the King by Rebecca Perry, and Loved and Missed by Susie Boyt.
